Squash players marooned by storm

Bermuda's national squash team was stuck at an airport in Jamaica yesterday afternoon after the Senior CASA Squash Championships was abandoned with Hurricane Dean on course for the Caribbean Island.

Team spokesman Roger Sherratt said he believed all flights out of Jamaica had been abandoned leaving them with no way to get home.

"Our team is trying to get out of Jamaica but I understand all flights may have been cancelled. It looks like they will be stuck and I'm not sure of the plans if that's the case," he added.

"They are at the airport and I believe American Airlines has already stopped flights in and out of Jamaica, and all the other airlines are fully booked."

The team had been due to take on Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals last night after beating hosts Jamaica and Guyana in the earlier rounds. The Island's junior cycling team also missed out on a regional event because of the storm.

The Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Barbados were due to be held in barbados this weekend but has been postponed.

The competition has been put off for several weeks. Bermuda team manager Kris Hedges was in Barbados and hoped to meet with event organisers to settle on the new date. Bermuda men's squash team continued their impressive form by beating hosts Jamaica 3-2 in the Senior CASA Squash Championships at the Liguanea Club, in Kingston, yesterday.

Number one Patrick Foster gave Bermuda the lead with his 3-2 victory over Wayne Burrowes. Michael Shrubb then defeated Chris Bicknell 3-0, winning (9-2, 9-1, 9-7).

Nick Kyme defeated Chris Binnie 3-0 to claim victory for the Island. He won (9-5, 9-1, 9-7).

Bermuda's Richard Van Liendon went down 3-0 to Dane Schwier, while Melrindo Caines went down 3-0 to Bruce Bicknell.

In their first game of the tournament Bermuda beat Guyana.
