Zuill aiming to fire Hogges' campaign
The Bermuda Hogges open their season in a few weeks time with a few frash faces in the squad to bolster various departments that were lacking last season.
None more so then Devonshire Colts' talismanic striker, Aljame Zuill, who will put on a Hogges uniform for the first time this season in an effort to bring Bermuda's professional side out of the duldrums of USL-D2 league.
The 32-year old striker was a surprise omission from last year's squad, but had vowed to make his presence felt in his domestic form and come into the fray of the team for this season.
"I offered my services to the Hogges last year, but nothing came out of it so I remained focused on my job, which is to score goals, and let my body of work do my talking", Zuill told The Royal Gazette
"I spoke to Kyle recently to let him know i was still interested in the chance to play and we worked something out and here I am.
"I have a good relationship with the coaches and they knew where I stood so it was just the case of working out the finer details."
And with Zuill finding the back of the net on a regular basis for Colts this previous season, it was no surprise that he was included in this year's roster.
"Last year they had no one to put the ball in the back of net for them. Goals win games and if you concede more then you score you will always be on the short end of the stick", continued Zuill.
"We had a very good team last year, but lacked the potency in the striker position with a person to hold the ball up. This is one of my strengths, holding up the ball enabling team-mates to run off me, so I am putting this task on my shoulders to help and create more opportunities."
And a very highly motivated Zuill said that he will do everything he possibly can to drag the Hogges off the bottom.
"I am a very ambitious player, so I want us to be in contention for the title this year."
"And from a personal stand point, I want 10-15 goals which would be respectable. As a striker, you have to not only score goals but create chances, for yourself and others around you."
"This is going to be my job this season", stated Zuill.
Making no false pretenses over what lies ahead, Zuill reckons the team will be more focused then ever before. And it starts in training.
"Practice makes perfect, so we must train hard and this will make the game easier on us."
"Most of the guys in the team I have played with previously in my time at the national level as well as domestically, so it is about getting gelled together once again and having fun."
Goals for Zuill in a Hogges jersey early in the season could also keep him in the reckoning for a national team slot for their upcoming matches.
"Hopefully I can find my scoring touch early in the season with the Hogges and carry this onto the World Cup Qualifyiers as well as the Digicel Cup this summer."
"I have just spoken to Kenny Thompson and I will be in training next week with the national squad, once I recover fully from my injury."
