Warren wins second title
GLENEAGLES, Scotland ¿ Marc Warren earned his second European Tour title after beating fellow Briton Simon Wakefield in a play-off for the Johnnie Walker Championship on Sunday.
Both players parred the first extra hole before Warren hit the final hole green, the only hole used for the play-off, for a birdie while his opponent could only par.
"It's an incredible feeling to win here in Scotland, although I feel sorry for Simon, just pipping him at the post," Warren said after picking up the $469,000 first prize.
Wakefield, looking for a maiden title, had to settle for his second runner-up placing. He also finished second behind Ernie Els in the 2005 Asian Open.
The pair had finished on 12-under-par 280, a stroke ahead of the field after Warren posted a four-under 69 and Wakefield a 70.
"I held up very well and I'm proud of myself for not dropping a shot all day and only losing out in a play-off to a birdie," said Wakefield.
Third-round pace setter Wakefield led for much of the final round until Scotland's Warren birdied the 72nd by holing an eight-foot putt. The finale went into sudden death after Englishman Wakefield missed his chance from 12 feet.
The pair finished a stroke better than another Swede, Martin Erlandsson, and Denmark's Soren Hansen.
Hansen carded a 68, losing his chance by failing to hole a six-foot birdie putt on the last.
Erlandsson set the target, making eagles on the second and ninth holes for a 66. The Swede's final day burst ensured his card for next season.
Fredrik Andersson-Hed, who shared the overnight lead with Wakefield, was hindered by back problems and faded out of contention with a double-bogey on the 13th.
He finished two shots away from the play-off with Britain's Graeme Storm.
Tournament chairman Colin Montgomerie's slow start left him four shots behind the play-off pair in tied ninth.
