Teachers take tour of local park

JP Skinner BIOS Education Officer helps Denise Berry and Heather DeSilva test the sea water.

Teachers took to the great outdoors last week for a series of sessions with scientists from Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS).

The field trips were part of Bermuda Union of Teachers' annual conference and saw more than 40 teachers visit Walsingham Park, better known as Tom Moore's Jungle, to learn about the Island's geology.

BIOS education officer JP Skinner said: "It's been great. I think the teachers have enjoyed it and often what's great with teachers is sharing ideas. Having a collective think tank is often one of the best aspects of the day."

He said the sessions were part of BIOS' Explorer programme which gives students the chance to go on summer expeditions and gives teachers lesson plans to help them to incorporate marine science into the classroom.

"The idea is that they can use relevant local examples," he said. "It helps make their lessons more exciting and gets students switched on."

Integrating technology into student learning was the subject of more BUT workshops held at CedarBridge Academy over the last two days.

Hundreds of teachers took part in the sessions organised by Bermuda Technology Education Collaborative (B.TEC) in partnership with the University of Virginia (UVA).

BUT general secretary Mike Charles said: "They went very well. We have had really good feedback from both teachers and presenters."
