Ferry hard to tell the difference

Free ferry services yesterday morning appeared not to attract many new commuters for 'Burn Fat Not Fuel Day' – although it appeared many more people were on the ferries last night.

As part of the initiative commuters were offered free public transportation, but the message apparently wasn't very clear to those taking the ferries in the morning as the women behind the ticket counter said they had people coming in to buy tickets.

Colin Minors, the supervisor of the Hamilton Ferry Terminal, said he thought there were some new faces on the east end ferries, but that the day could have been more successful held on a Thursday.

He said: "I didn't see that many people, but on the west end ferries there were a few different faces. The majority was the usual crowd that came in. Not much was new people.

"I suggest it should be on a Thursday."

One commuter, Linda Govia, however, said she thoroughly enjoyed taking the ferry from St. George's.

She said: "Usually I drive every morning to work but I really enjoyed my ferry ride this morning. It's quicker then travelling through the traffic.

"There seemed to be more people on the St. George's ferry then usual."

Ferry workers said they did not see much difference in the level of commuters and the extra ferry that had been added in case there was an influx, was empty when it arrived in Hamilton.

Last night, however, one person called The Royal Gazette to say the ferry to St. George's was 'packed out with many more people on board than usual'.
