Derby get first Premiership win

DERBY (AP) — Derby beat Newcastle 1-0 yesterday for its first win since returning to the English Premier League for this season.

Scotland striker Kenny Miller scored the winning goal in the 39th minute of his debut to hand Newcastle its first loss of the season and lift Derby off the bottom of the table.

Miller's goal left Derby with four points from six games, the same as Tottenham and Reading. Derby moved up one place to 19th in the 20-team standings, pushing Bolton into last.

Derby had conceded 15 goals in five matches this season, its first in the Premier League since 2002, but started positively at Pride Park, with Steve Howard having a shot saved in the first minute.

Howard then headed wide from the resulting corner.

Tyrone Mears and Howard then had efforts saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper before Miller hit a 30-metre shot past the keeper and into the net.

Miller, who was acquired from Celtic last month, forced another corner at the start of the second half, but Howard headed it wide of the target.

Newcastle's loss dropped it one place to tenth.
