Curtis hits back at Brown critics

Premier Ewart Brown's constituency campaign organiser Andre Curtis hit out at critics who failed in their bid to kick Dr. Brown out of Warwick South Central.

Both men have repeatedly come under fire since the summer over the faith-based tourism initiative which Mr. Curtis receives hundreds of thousands of taxpayers' dollars to run.

During the Progressive Labour Party's victory party at Alaska Hall, Mr. Curtis told The Royal Gazette: "I think that with all the stabbing, all the gutter politics the UBP were doing, trying to discredit the Premier and myself, I think the people of Constituency 26 spoke tonight.

"Not only did we beat that guy (United Bermuda Party candidate Roderick Simons) — we beat the living c*** out of the guy. I think the people of Constituency 26 spoke."

Mr. Curtis is contracted to receive $400,000 to run faith-based tourism this financial year, but Opposition MP Wayne Furbert, a well-known member of the church community, claims he has attracted no more than 100 visitors so far.

Mr. Curtis once claimed the figure is roughly 1,500, but has failed to back himself up every time he has been asked for exact numbers. When asked how many events he has organised, his answers have been variable.

Both he and the Premier deny faith-based tourism is being used as a method for Dr. Brown to get cash to Mr. Curtis as a thank you gesture for running his constituency campaign.

Early on Tuesday, the Bermuda Sun's website reported Mr. Curtis' prediction that the PLP would claim 28 seats. On the night, they took 22.

Asked if this was another example of him getting his numbers wrong, Mr. Curtis said: "I thought we would have picked up two more seats in St. George's and Smith's."

Asked how many visitors faith-based tourism had brought to Bermuda so far this financial year, Mr. Curtis appeared ready to respond but was whisked away by PLP chairman David Burt. Mr. Burt joked that if the interview continued The Royal Gazette may end up printing a list of all the questions Mr. Curtis refused to answer.

However, questions Mr. Curtis has refused to answer in recent weeks include:

n How many tourists have come to Bermuda for the faith-based tourism events in 2007-08?

¦ How many events have there been in 2007-08?

¦ What was Weekend Fit For A King (which you claimed took place in September as part of faith-based tourism)?

¦ Are we to assume that the continued failure to respond is your way of saying that the number of tourists so far is roughly 1,500 is a grossly misleading exaggeration?

¦ Are we to assume that, contrary to what you claimed previously, no event by the name of Weekend Fit For A King has taken place in 2007-08?

Please feel free to provide any information you can to prove these assumptions wrong.
