CableVision honours Raymond Russell
A philanthropist who raised more than $7,000 for needy people in just seven weeks was honoured for his efforts yesterday.
Raymond Russell was given CableVision's quarterly community service award at a ceremony at Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
The 67-year-old, from Pembroke, has helped countless people across the Island, both Bermudian and expatriate, either by raising funds, speaking out on their behalf or helping put them in touch with the services they need. In 2005 he raised more than $7,000 for Hope Homes in seven weeks. CableVision is now making a $1,000 donation to Hope Homes in his name.
Environment Minister Neletha Butterfield presented the award to Mr. Russell. She said: "It gives me great pleasure to be here this morning as we recognise Mr. Russell's years of dedicated service to the community. Throughout his life, he has made it a point to reach out and help people.
"He speaks for those who need representation. He ensures that their cause becomes his cause. I am proud to be a part of CableVision's community service award presentation to Raymond Russell today."
CableVision general manager Terry Roberson said: "Mr. Raymond Russell is a special sort of person, someone who has accomplished a great deal in his lifetime through community involvement. He demonstrates a generous and giving spirit and it gives me great pleasure to honour him today."
Mr. Russell said: "My father once said to me that there are three sides to every story and that everyone is human. This statement has served as a guiding force in my life. I help people because I have the know-how to do it. Helping a person who is sick by raising funds for a wheelchair, or speaking for someone in trouble who cannot speak for themselves, is just a part of who I am."
CableVision is looking for nominations for the next award in January. Email rnathan[AT]cablevision.bm or write to Rollin Nathan, Bermuda CableVision, PO Box 1642, Hamilton, HM GX. For more information visit www.cablevision.bm.
