Premier wants to 'alternate' location of meetings with Governor
Premier Ewart Brown has asked the Governor to consider alternating the venue of their weekly meetings.
The Premier last night revealed that Sir John Vereker has said he would consider the change — which would bring an end to the historic tradition of the leader of Bermuda going to Government House every week for talks with the Governor about the Island's latest political developments.
Dr. Brown, explaining the reason behind his request to change decades of protocol, told The Royal Gazette that the symbolism of the change could "reduce the tension that naturally accompanies our constitutional relationship".
Any other interpretation, he added, was "nothing but mischief".
Dr. Brown's comments came after VSB Radio reported news of a possible change to the weekly meeting arrangements between the Premier and Bermuda's ultimate political arbiter.
Asked if reports were true that he had asked the Governor to come to Cabinet Building for meetings, he replied: "I have asked the Governor to consider the idea of alternating the location of our weekly meetings and he has said he would think about it. Any other interpretation is nothing but mischief."
The new Premier added that the request was made from "one gentleman to another".
Attempts to contact Government House for a comment on the proposed changes were unsuccessful last night.
An official there told The Royal Gazette that Deputy Governor Mark Capes would speak on the issue on Tuesday.
