Former Bermuda Solicitor General Wilhelm Bourne has been sworn in as the new Attorney General of Anguilla.
According to a report on radiojamaica.com, Mr. Bourne promised to serve Anguilla “fairly, even-handedly and to the best of his ability”.
Mr. Bourne, 60, was sworn in by Anguilla’s Governor Andrew George.
Anguilla, located in the Caribbean, east of Puerto Rico, is one the United Kingdom’s 14 remaining Overseas Territories along with Bermuda.
It has a population of roughly 13,500.
Mr. Bourne served as Bermuda’s Solicitor General from July 2001 until his resignation this October to take up the Anguilla post.
Born in Barbados, Mr. Bourne originally came to Bermuda in 1968 as a Police officer.
But in 1984, he changed professions, electing to study law.
In addition to serving as Solicitor General, he also worked as a Crown counsel and a defence lawyer over the course of his 38 years in Bermuda.
In his new position, he is replacing Guyanese Ronald Scipio QC, who served Anguilla as AG for nine years.
According to radiojamaica.com: “Under the Anguilla Constitution, the Attorney General performs dual roles as the government’s chief legal officer and also provides legal advice to the island’s British Governor.”
