Premier eats at BeanZ Cafe
Newly opened BeanZ Cafe in Hamilton Parish may be slightly off the beaten track, but that didn't prevent the Premier of Bermuda from stopping by with a high-powered entourage to taste some simple, traditional fayre from its menu.
And the leader of the country Ewart Brown offered his personal support to enterprising cafe owner Colleen Bean who took a leap of faith last month to set herself up in business after years of working as a cashier.
BeanZ Cafe was originally featured in the Royal Gazette in mid-July and, as reported more recently, Ms Bean vowed to carry on her fledgling business next to Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club despite resigning from her job at HWP because she feared she faced being fired for starting a side-business while on an official leave of absence.
The newspaper coverage caught Dr. Brown's attention and he decided to stop by the cafe to offer his best wishes to Ms Bean. The Premier was joined by Labour Minister Derrick Burgess.
"I saw the story in the Royal Gazette and let me tell you it is very rare I see a story in the Royal Gazette that makes me happy," joked the Premier, as he explained to Ms Bean why he wanted to visit her new business.
Since being featured in the newspaper Ms Bean has been given support from strangers and old friends of her late mother Joan Bean, in some cases free bread and Bermuda fish have been delivered to her cafe, just off The Crawl, to boost her stock. The cafe serves up simple traditional Bermuda favourites such as macaroni cheese, peas 'n' rice, cheeseburgers and fish sandwiches.
Dr. Brown said: "I have immense admiration for people who are willing to take a calculated risk and what she has done. I thought it would be a positive gesture to come and show that we are supportive of her in her situation."
Ms Bean, with assistance from good friend Deborah Hutchings, business student Chloe Lambert and "the twins" had the cafe prepared for the special visit after being given advance warning that Bermuda's leader wanted to see her cafe for himself.
The prepared food for the Premier, his wife Wanda and the Premier's party, included fish cake, Spanish rice, fresh shrimp, Bermuda fish, sweet potato and salad, followed up with apple pie.
Afterwards Mrs Brown was reported to have raved with appreciation at the food served.
Cafe owner Ms Bean was simply delighted to see the Premier and said: "It makes me feel that I'm not alone in the world."
