Cougars keep a steady hand
DEVONSHIRE Cougars will be looking to continue their rich vein of form when they look to go top of the table tonight with a victory against Devonshire Colts at Devonshire Rec.
Cougars brushed aside fellow title contenders Dandy Town last week on the road and will play their first match at home against a struggling Colts team who haven't tasted victory yet this campaign.
The men from 'The Den' couldn't be blamed for looking past their Devonshire rivals as they go in search of a third league title in five years.
However, stalwart Omar Butterfield stated that this won't be the case as they will look to their preseason motto as inspiration.
"We have preached the motto of taking one game at a time all preseason," said Butterfield. "The match against Town is over, we got the win and must now focus on Colts. We have to continue to work hard in training and let our performances do the talking.
"We are not worried about Colts or any team we come across this season. We will do what needs to be done and move one.
"Once a game is done it is done and we can't do anything about it. As long as we do what we are supposed to do, things will work out for us."
Getting off on a winning note was crucial for a side that was predicted to come third this term. And it seems as though the thought of third place touched a nerve for many of the players, especially Butterfield.
And barring no injuries in the near future, he will again test his mettle against his former club when the two side lock horns once more in the semi-finals of the Martonmere in a week's time.
"It is excellent to get off on a winning note and get a win against one of our main contenders for the title. This is good for not only the players, but the coaching staff and fans as well.
"It takes the pressure off in a sense that we are off the mark with three points and can move forward in a positive fashion.
"The pre-season predictions touched a nerve a bit as we know that we are better than third place. But we have to stay in reality and know that things don't work for you all the time.
"I won't comment on the psychological impact of our match last week in regards to the Martonmere as that was one game and Town can very well regroup and come back stronger than before.
"It feels good to be on the field even though I have a few knocks but myself along with a few others will soldier on. At the end of the day, the placing of the club in the standings is first and foremost before any individual awards."
