The game needs people like Kennedy

THIS week it is with pleasure that I highlight Kennedy Simmons. Kennedy, pictured below, is from Somerset and hale, rain or shine he comes to the chess club on Tuesday evenings. He is a stalwart of the chess club. Not only is he always on time, but there have been times when he has to sit and wait for his opponents to show up and they don't. But Kennedy's good spirits prevail and with a smile and knowing laugh he says: "Well, looks like I'd better head back up to Somerset" and with that he is on his way.

Kennedy has also played in the last three Chess Olympiads — his first was in 2000 in Istanbul, Turkey. After that it was two years later in Bled Slovenia, then in 2004 Calvia Mallorca.

Even though I was with him in all these places, it is hard for me to say which was his most enjoyable time. That is because Kennedy has a good time wherever he goes.

This year he had a very important role to play in Turin, Italy. He was the delegate for the Bermuda team and as such, Kennedy's vote helped determine where the next Olympiad will take place, Kennedy makes his own special contribution to the chess club.

This game was one that Kennedy played in the Bermuda Championship Open 2005 against Sami Lill who had an higher ElO rating then he did.

Kennedy was playing white and Sami Lill was playing black. The game went on for fourteen moves before anything was captured. And Kennedy had the first strike as you can see in Diagram 1. With this attack on the Kingside Kennedy just keep on attacking until the Queen is even gone as in Diagram 2.

In Diagram 3 Kennedy could have even made a Queen sacrifice for a rook & knight and still win the game with a piece up.

However Kennedy moved his Queen f6.

At this point Sami must have asked himself how can I get out of this mess? His King can't castle. Plus he can't even attack Kennedy's Queen. And with move 28.Ne4 as in Diagram 4 Sami Lill resigned.

The club need more players like you Kennedy.
