Pilgrim bids to aid Bay's progess

Bailey's Bay team from last year for this weekend's Eastern Counties first round match with champions St. David's.

Surprisingly Bay decided against bringing in players from outside their club ranks as they bid to reclaim the trophy they lost to St. David's in the 1987 final.

The guest players who were available to Bay include former club players Terry Burgess, Ricky Hill, Corey Hill and Mark Trott and Andre Manders and Dexter Basden who reside in the area and qualify under the two year residency rule.

Bay's bowling attack, with the inclusion of left arm medium pacer Pilgrim, is only slightly stronger than last year when Gibbons, Anthony Braithwaite and Clarkie Trott were their three main bowlers. But while they failed to take a wicket between them, Ricky Hill claimed two of the four St. David's wickets with his seamers to finish with two for 29 to go with his 50 earlier in the day.

Gibbons, who has been performing well with the bat in the Birmingham League where he plays for Halesowen, is due back from England this evening and Bay will be looking for a good allround performance from the man who has scored 1622 runs in the competition and taken 74 wickets.

Great things are also expected of Charlie Marshall and Glenn Smith, Bay's two most in form batsmen this season. Marshall has scored 518 runs in domestic competitions this season at an average of 57.55 while Smith has scored 448 runs at at average of 44.80.

Team: Chris Smith (capt), Charlie Marshall (vice capt), Glenn Smith, Devrae Hollis, Jermaine Outerbridge, Irving Romaine, Dennis Pilgrim (colt), Cal Dill, Clarkie Trott, Noel Gibbons, Anthony Braithwaite. Res: Allan Walker, Jahmiko Marshall, Desmond Crockwell.

Cable and Wireless returned to their winning ways and a Steven West XI upstaged a big-name Hamilton Parish Old Peppers team in latest Evening Cricket League matches at Shelly Bay Field.

Cable and Wireless beat Fire Services by seven wickets after restricting them to 60-8 in their 16 overs and then replying with 67-3 from just 6.5 overs.

Roger Dill was high man for Fire Services with 15 while Wendell Simmons hit 13 and D.Malpas 14. Frank Morgan led the Cable and Wireless bowling with four for 18 from four overs while Dane Brown took two for two and El James and Kim Pitt one wicket apiece.

Mel Armstrong was high man for Cable and Wireless with 34 while James and Clevie Smith both scored 10 not out. Alan Wilkinson was the best Fire Services bowler with two for 22 while Randy Boyles took one for 25.

On Monday evening the Steven West XI beat the Old Peppers by four wickets, 104 to 109-6. The Old Peppers were 79-9 at one stage before a last wicket stand of 25 between Vincent Whitter (12 not out) and Wally Manders took them past 100.

Lionel Raynor and Roger Hunt were joint top scorers with 19 each while `Smokey' Simons scored 13. Mike Madeiros claimed a hat-trick in his third over on his way to five for 36 from his four overs while Ronnie Cox took three for 28 and B.West two for eight.

Mike Dunkley scored 46 to lead his team to victory while B.Brewer hit 23 and Madeiros 14. Clarence Tucker took two for 17, Manders two for 28 and Sheldon Furbert and Chris Tuckett both one wicket each. Hamilton Parish also fielded Ralph Hill and Elliott Jennings.
