Shellshocked youth team try to pick up the pieces
Their World Cup qualifying hopes all but shattered, members of Bermuda?s Under-20 national football squad were left to pick up the pieces yesterday following Tuesday?s humiliating 11-1 drubbing at the hands of host country Haiti.
The Island?s youngsters were outclassed in every department of the game during Tuesday?s nightmare in the Caribbean. And now they must quickly regroup for today?s match against what is expected to be an equally tough Jamaican outfit.
It?s a game Bermuda must win in order to keep their World Cup qualifying hopes alive.
?We basically have made this into a knockout competition and we?ve got to go on and win the next two games if we want to advance. And hopefully the players are up for it,? stated assistant coach Paul Scope from Port-au-Prince yesterday.
Jamaica defeated Netherlands Antilles 2-0 on Tuesday night and can qualify for the next round with victory today over Bermuda at the Stade Saint Marc.
Scope admitted Bermuda would have to raise their game considerably if they were to savour any success against the Jamaicans.
?I think the players understand that and obviously at this point we are looking for anything positive because when you get beaten 11-1 there?s not many positives to begin with,? he added.
?It?s not easy after a thrashing like that, but we had a meeting and talked it out and obviously the players are disappointed in themselves.
?We talked through a few things and then moved on because that game is over with, and we can?t do anything about it now. We got it all out last night.?
Bermuda?s humbled combatants continued the healing process yesterday by relaxing in the hotel pool in order to keep their body temperatures down in searing conditions, and were due to train in the early evening in Port-au-Prince.
?We decided to keep them out of the heat to prevent them from burning up so much,? Scope said. ?Some of the boys at half-time (during Tuesday?s match) . . . we literally had to put them in the shower because they were overheating and their skin was red. And I?m talking about black and white boys.
?Conditions are hard, but we have to deal with them.?
Bermuda?s team could undergo at least three changes for tonight?s match against Jamaica as a few members are currently listed as ?doubtful?.
Question marks hang over team captain Keishen Bean (groin) and defender Norris Wilkinson (ankle) while striker Angelo Simmons is expected to retain his spot despite taking some hard knocks in Tuesday?s contest.
?Keishen is definitely struggling with a groin injury. He was very brave in playing for 70 minutes. But we took him off in the hope we can have him for the rest of the tournament,? Scope added.
Coach Kyle Lightbourne, who opted for a 4-4-2 formation in the first match, is also expected to make a few tactical changes for today?s game.
?We do plan to make a few changes and use the full squad,? Scope said.
Following today?s clash with Jamaica, Bermuda meet Netherlands Antilles on Saturday in their final qualifying match before returning home on Sunday evening.
