Town, Trojans on course for repeat final

Dandy Town and Somerset Trojans remain on a collision course to meet each other for the second straight year in the Martonmere Cup final following Tuesday night?s final group matches at the Den.

Town avenged a recent league loss to PHC Zebras by handing Kyle Lightbourne?s men a 2-1 defeat to book a date with cross-town rivals Devonshire Cougars in next week?s second semi-final, slated for Somerset Cricket Club.

Hornets have had Cougars? number in recent years, although the ?Big Cats? demonstrated tremendous character by reaching the Martonmere semi finals for the second straight year after losing their opening Group B match against Trojans 4-2 earlier this month.

That match-up could also possibly see Heys Wolfe and Raymond Beach on opposing sides for the first time. Wolfe returned to Town over the off-season, but has missed Hornets? last four matches through injury.

Beach, meanwhile, has picked up where he left off before being suspended in January, 2005 ? finding the back of the net regularly.

The prolific goalscorer has now netted five goals in only three matches.

Hornets clinched a fifth Martonmere title by defeating seven-time champions Trojans 1-0 last year at the National Sports Centre.

Next Monday?s first semi-final at the Den involving perennial cup kings Trojans and Zebras also promises to be an exciting affair.

Trojans are hoping to advance to an unprecedented 12th overall Martonmere Cup final in what will be a repeat of the 1992-93 final which Somerset won 1-0 over Zebras.

PHC will be making their first appearance in the semi-finals since 2002-03.

Both semi-finals will be preceded by women?s Konica Cup semi-final matches.

A Konica Cup make-up match between Lady Cougars and Somerset Hurricanes has been scheduled for tonight (8 p.m.) at Devonshire Recreation Club.

And the outcome of tonight?s match will determine who meets St.George?s or Lady Rams next week in the competition?s semi-finals.
