Strength in depth carries Rangers to clean sweep
Janeiro Tucker came good on a promise to win every major cup title this season when Southampton Rangers defeated Flatts in Sunday?s Premier Division KO Cup Final at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
Rangers beats Flatts by 41 runs to add the KO Cup to their Belco Cup, Two-Day and One Day League titles.
They also became the first club since Western Stars to complete a clean sweep of top honours and third to achieve the coveted feat in the new millennium.
Tucker attributed his team?s success to their enormous depth.
?Even when some of our players have been off Island these guys have been able to carry on where we left off. And that?s why it is nice to have such a big pool of players,? he said.
?When we lost players to trips or injuries the team were still able to carry on. And overall I thought the guys really worked hard this year, and so my hat goes off to them.
?When you talk about ending the season having won all of the trophies up for grabs, this is something you have to really appreciate because it doesn?t happen too often.?
The last time Rangers swept all domestic honours was in 1980 under the captaincy of Colin Blades.
?I?m just glad we achieved this feat which is good for Rangers, the Southampton community and Bermuda cricket in general,? Tucker added.
Ever since the arrival of Clevie Wade as coach in 1999, Rangers have dominated the local cricket scene.
And although it?s no secret Wade inherited a team on the verge of success, he has proven to be the missing link needed to carry Rangers over the threshold.
?When I first came onboard my main objective was to get the team to a level whereby they could compete for top honours. They had a good team but just couldn?t get to that next level,? Wade explained.
The former St.George?s? skipper won a Premier Division league title in his very first season as coach.
And seven years later Wade and Rangers have celebrated five Premier Division championships, three Belco Cup triumphs and two KO Cup titles, and have placed no lower than fourth in the league during that period.
The past season saw Rangers successfully defend their league, Belco Cup and KO Cup crowns.
?I just wanted to establish the team as a reckoning force, but things got better as years went by,? Wade added. ?The team just went from strength to strength because they caught on so quick and realised what it was going to take to win titles.
?Another main goal of mine was to get the players to believe in themselves. And by believing in yourself that gives you inner strength to go from one level to the next.
?Each year they were getting successful and enjoying the fruits of the hard work, commitment and dedication they put in.
?And after winning three of the five trophies last season our main goal this season was to make a clean sweep, and that?s exactly what we accomplished.?
