Trott heroics help stretch win streak
Bermuda 179
Dominica Schools 157
Bailey?s Bay seamer Kearon Trott produced a devastating spell that triggered a severe batting collapse and ultimately laid the foundation for Bermuda Under-19 national squad?s 22-run victory over Dominica Schools in the Sir Garfield Sobers Youth Tournament in Allington, Barbados yesterday.
With the Dominicans on course for victory at 132 for two, Trott was introduced into Bermuda?s attack as a fifth change bowler and in the space of 36 balls claimed six wickets for 25 runs to earn his team-mates a sixth win on tour, and also stretch their unbeaten streak to four games.
It was a performance which drew praise from assistant coach Herbie Bascome, himself a seamer.
?I am very pleased to know that these guys are capable of maintaining a good line and length. And the discipline these guys are beginning to show is unbelievable,? Bascome told The Royal Gazette from Barbados last night.
?They are thinking, taking their time to check the field placing and overall showing a lot of character. And everybody is pulling their weight and setting good examples both on and off the field. They are continually focused on the task at hand and growing from strength to strength.?
Bascome?s assistant, Andre (Doc) Manders, described the mood in the camp following yesterday?s inspiring win as ?buoyant?.
?The guys have had a whole week of cricket and morale is high because we beat both of the teams that defeated us (Queen?s Park Club and Dominica Schools) the first time (last week),? he said.
Earlier Dominica openers Kevin Hodge (53) and Tyrone Taussaint (49) got the Caribbean team off to a wonderful start. But once skipper Taussaint was run out ? one shy of a half-century ? Bermuda?s three-pronged attack of Malachi Jones, Rodney Trott and Kearon Trott gained the upper hand, and never eased their grip on the proceedings.
Jones and Rodney Trott claimed one for 24 and one for 34 respectively as Dominica were dismissed in 38 overs chasing Bermuda?s total of 179 on an easy playing pitch.
For the first time on tour, Bermuda won the toss yesterday and elected to bat first, openers Oronde Bascome (22) and Terryn Fray (11) producing 50 runs for the first wicket before the former was run out.
Bascome?s dismissal ignited a mini-slide which saw Bermuda lose two additional wickets in the space of ten runs before Jones (30) and Chris Douglas (23) rescued the innings with a timely 43-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Tailenders Dennico Hollis (30) and Kearon Trott (15 not out) then prolonged Dominica?s misery in the field by adding 41 runs for the eighth wicket before Bermuda exhausted their allotted 40 overs with one wicket in hand. Off spinner Raule Fredericks led the Dominican bowling with three for 46 while fast bowler Scott Eierrelouis took two for 22.
Second-placed Bermuda now have the weekend off before they meet Grenada Schools on Monday in their final Zone A match.
