Another win for Bermuda?s youth on tour

Somerset Cup Match hopefuls Rodney Trott and Malachi Jones claimed eight wickets between them to inspire Bermuda?s Under 19 national team to a narrow 15-run win over Toronto Cricket Association in a rain-affected match reduced to 24 overs in Ellerton, Barbados yesterday.

Off spinner Trott led the way by seizing five wickets for 21 runs off only 4.4 overs while seamer Jones took three for 20 off seven overs to help restrict the Canadians under the century mark and earn Bermuda their second straight win at the Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament.

The Island?s young batsmen did their best to cope with wet conditions after losing the crucial toss and being sent in to bat.

Openers Oronde Bascome (11) and Terryn Fray (one) were both removed in quick succession to give the Canadians the early upper hand.

But then Chris Douglas (22) and Trott (ten) began to rebuild the innings when rain halted play for an hour and a half, forcing the umpires to reduce the match to 24 overs.

Toronto struck again once the skies cleared when Trott was caught behind by a delivery that stood up from a good length.

However, Douglas and Jones (27) ? who took a blow to the elbow from a rising delivery ? kept the innings together with a timely 40-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Yet the Canadians refused to bow their heads and managed to pick up three Bermuda wickets in the space 27 runs.

Jones hit three fours and a six while Douglas struck two fours.

Tejas Kittur claimed two for 11 and Rohan Kittur one for 38 led the Canadian?s bowling.

?I think the guys started off good batting wise until the rain came and changed the wicket around,? Bermuda assistant coach Andre (Doc) Manders told from Barbados last night.

?The ball started jumping a bit, however I thought our batsmen still managed to cope fairly well with the conditions.?

In reply, Toronto struggled against the varied combination of Trott and Jones, backed up by some equally penetrative bowling from Tamuri Tucker (one for 12).

?Our bowlers bowled a good line and length and were able to pin their opponents down from the outset,? Manders added.

H.Kotok topped the Canadian?s batting with 21 followed by opener Harbik Thkor who scored 13.

Bermuda take on Dominica Schools at Inch Marlow today where a minute silence will be held to honour the memory of former Under 19 national youth team captain Travis Smith who will be laid to rest this afternoon at St.Peter?s Church in St.George?s.

?We thought it appropriate to honour Travis as he was a former Under 19 captain for Bermuda,? stated Bermuda assistant coach Herbie Bascome.
