Coach Logie ? the man who believed
Ask any player in the Bermuda team to give a single reason for Bermuda?s success at the ICC Trophy and more than likely they?ll point to coach Gus Logie.
The former West Indian Test player and coach has made a huge impression since taking over the reins less than four months ago.
At almost every opportunity on this tour, the players have sung his praises.
But the Trinidadian is quick to return the compliment, insisting what the team have achieved in such a short period of time is testament to their work ethic.
?Personally I?m elated I was given this opportunity by the Cricket Board of Bermuda to work with the national team,? said Logie as the players around him celebrated following yesterday?s crucial victory over the USA.
?It?s been a challenge but I saw an opportunity to at least lend some of my experience to the players and they have done tremendously well.
?They?ve worked hard, nothing was too much for them to do. They worked hard and at the end of the day they got their just rewards.
?At this point in time I?m very happy for them, they know they have more work to do and I think they appreciate that, but let them enjoy this moment.?Logie said qualification for the World Cup had not come as a great surprise as he?d always been confident in the players? ability.
?Before we left I said if they play to their true potential ? and I don?t think these guys appreciate how talented they are ? they could succeed.
?What they lack in terms of experience, they certainly make up for in terms of raw talent.
?They have the knowledge and understanding of the game, it?s just a matter of applying it.
?We?ve seen them do it on so many occasions in this tournament. I think beating teams like UAE and Denmark the way they did, it tells me there?s a lot more to be had from the players and I hope they understand that and continue to work as hard as they can.?
The coach, however, admitted that team spirit had been vital in achieving the right results.
?We talked about leadership in the team, we?d give people responsibility and roles,? added Logie.
?It?s a matter of trust and respect for one another at the end of day and what we tried to develop in the team was people sharing in each other?s experiences, being happy for each other when they did well, feeling sad for each other when they didn?t and always encouraging each other.
?We all go out there and don?t want to make mistakes but when we do we can?t afford to come down hard on any one individual. We analyse it and put it right. Once people can work like that you?ll see the results.?
