Manders makes a point as match row continues
If you thought the St. David's and Western Stars fiasco was settled, then you'd had better think again.
That's because Stars, even though awarded six points for the postponed match against the Islanders, have now appealed in an effort to obtain the maximum allowed.
And again at centre of the controversy, is the Bermuda Cricket Board's new bonus points system, implemented at the start of last season.
St.David's controversial player/coach, Clay Smith, refused to send his team out on the field in protest of his banned fast bowler, Mackie Crane, during the Islanders' opening 2003 league fixture against the defending league champions on May 10.
Crane received a one match suspension for aborting a practice match involving Bermuda's Under-19 squad at the National Sports Centre without properly notifying the coaching staff.
The Islanders submitted a written appeal to the BCB that was later rejected with Stars granted six points.
However, Stars veteran Arnold Manders is demanding his team be awarded the maximum of 16 points.
“We have already submitted a protest,” Manders confirmed yesterday.
“Either we get the maximum points or they (BCB) change the whole points system so that nobody gets affected by those types of things.
“Last year we didn't have to play Southampton (in the final game of the 2002 season). We already had them by seven points. We could have showed up at St.John's (Field) and forfeited the match to Southampton and we still would have won the league by a point. Now is that right?”
Manders said it was time to get rid of the current bonus points system altogether, one that currently sees a losing team in some instances receive more points then a winning team.
“They should revert to the previous system,” he added.
“Five points for a win, three points for a draw and one point for a no-result.
“Then you wouldn't get any arguments.
“Somebody defaults, the other team gets five points. And nobody can lose a game and get more points than a winner.”
Meanwhile, the BCB yesterday announced a make-up schedule for several matches that failed to get underway earlier this season.
PHC and Willow Cuts will play this Saturday along with Social Club and Bailey's Bay.
Devonshire and Flatts will meet on May 31, while Social Club and Leg Trappers will play on June 28.
Due to date restrictions experienced this season, these games have been scheduled on dates previously reserved for county matches.
