Village veteran rarin? to go
Kentoine Jennings insists he?s fit enough for North Village?s potential Premier Division championship decider against whipping boys Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park tomorrow.
Jennings, 35, suffered a slight hamstring pull minutes before half-time during Bermuda?s 1-1 draw with Jamaica?s Under-23 national team at the National Sports Centre on Thursday night.
However, yesterday the veteran sweeper put any concerns to rest by declaring himself fit to help in Village?s bid for a third league title in five seasons and seventh overall.
?When I stretched out for the ball I felt a little pull in the hamstring area.
?At half-time I iced it down in the dressing room and I felt I could have gone on. But being this was only a practice match I decided best not to risk any further damage,? said Jennings, on the verge of collecting a sixth league championship medal.
Following a brief professional stint in the UK at Hereford United along with Meshach Wade in the early 1990s, Jennings won three Premier Division championships at now defunct Vasco da Gama between 1996 and 1999.
He was also a member of Village?s 2002 and 2003 championship-winning teams.
Jennings was a last-minute addition to Kyle Lightbourne?s squad who ended a seven-game losing streak at the NSC on Thursday night.
?I decided not to make myself available for the New England game because I was experiencing a bit of discomfort with my ankle,? Jennings continued. ?I told the coach I would have to wait until after that match to see how things felt and then go from there.?
Jennings eventually got the nod when PHC Zebras? skipper Blenn Bean became ill, leaving coach Lightbourne no choice but to call on the Village stalwart.
?That match (against Jamaica) was definitely encouraging,? he said. ?It was very encouraging to see some of the younger players play well, especially Seion Darrell. It was pleasing to see the youngsters perform at a pretty decent level and us not playing on the back foot for most of the game.?
As for Village?s league championship hopes, Jennings said: ?Everybody is looking forward to this. But we are not going to take anything for granted because we all know the game is played on the actual day.
?But for Keishen (Bean), Jemeiko (Jennings), Kofi (Dill) and myself, I think playing the other night will have given us a bit of an edge in terms of staying sharp. Nobody is over confident and on the day we have to do the job. And if we can go out there and do what we know we are capable of doing we will be okay.?
Rangers, meanwhile, have nothing to play for other than pride having already been relegated though Somerset Trojans ?- the only other team with a mathematical chance of pipping Village for the title ? may beg to differ.
A Rangers upset over the Reds coupled by a Trojans victory over Devonshire Colts at Somerset Cricket Club next Tuesday night would see the race for the championship decided on the final day of the league season when Village host Somerset at Bernard Park.
Trojans can effectively condemn Colts to the First Division with victory on Tuesday.
Elsewhere tomorrow, Boulevard will be looking to further distance themselves from Colts when they host Martonmere Cup champions Dandy Town at BAA Field while PHC Zebras, who can ill-afford to give any further ground at this stage of the season, take on Devonshire Cougars at Southampton Oval.
In the First Division, promoted Paget Lions can take another step towards clinching the league championship when they host X Roads at White Hill Field while St.David?s, Southampton Rangers and Wolves resume their pursuit of the remaining promotion spot.
As it stands, only two points separate second-placed St.David?s from fourth-placed Wolves with three matches remaining in the season.
Southampton Rangers are away to Social Club at Bernard Park, Wolves are away to St.George?s at Wellington Oval, St.David?s host Prospect United at Lords and cellar dwellers Somerset Eagles take on Hamilton Parish at White Hill Field.
