Minister backs clubs
Sports Minister Dale Butler will address local club executives next Monday at a special meeting to be held at the Bermuda Athletic Association Club.
Taking a "proactive" stance to help rid the prevalence of drug use and anti-social behaviour from their premises, club officials have invited the Minister to take part in discussions geared towards combating the social ills which have perennially plagued local sports.
Also expected to take precedence at next week's meeting is the potential reinstatement of an independent national club association comprised of local club representatives.
"We will be meeting with the minister to discuss what can be done to improve the current situation and to see how we can proceed in the future. We feel that we (club executives) need to be more proactive in terms of what clubs are doing. So this is one way of showing that we are concerned because clubs have a crucial role to play in the community," said Bermuda Football Association official Aldwyn Savery.
Club officials recently met during a president's meeting at Southampton Rangers Sports Club to discuss, among various other topics, possible means of promoting a more family-oriented environment at club grounds.
"The first meeting was attended by executives from ten clubs and now we have expanded the second meeting to include all club presidents, secretaries and representatives. So are we expecting a larger audience and to receive more ideas," Savery added.
