Zebras complete clean sweep

Inspired by the success of their senior team, PHC's youngsters galloped away with the Under-15 Crystal Palace and Under-18 titles as the 2001/02 season reached its climax with the Shell Youth Cup finals at Bernard Park recently.

The young Zebras thus made a clean sweep of league and cup honours.

In the Under-18 final, PHC came up against Boulevard and after 90 minutes of pulsating soccer, which featured three great goals and a sending off , the teams remained tied at 3-3.

With both sides fielding players who had played at the senior level, it was PHC's Dennis Russell who gave his team the lead in their very first attack. However, not long after the celebrations had subsided, Blazers' gifted young forward Tekehyi Walker drew the teams level.

PHC squandered a chance to retake the lead moments before the half when Blazers' 'keeper Conneko Trott made a good save after Zebras were awarded a penalty. Then Boulevard took a 2-1 lead courtesy of Jahkiel Samuels, but Zebras immediately stormed back through Jalani and Tori Russell to first draw level and then retake the lead.

Boulevard were still not ready to throw in the towel and after a senseless trip in the penalty box, Samuels blasted home the resulting kick to send the game into a penalty shoot-out, in which PHC edged by their opponents 5-4.

In the Under-15 Crystal Palace final, Zebras outscored Somerset 5-3. Lamont Butterfield gave PHC a fifth minute lead with a powerfully struck shot before Somerset's Kenny Thompson equalised.

However, in the space of ten minutes, Zebras countered with three quick strikes from Antwon Russell, Aquino Grant and a Somerset own goal to go 4-1 up.

Somerset, determined not to go down without a fight, managed to reduce the deficit through Mathew Carvelho and Levi Richardson to make it 4-3 before Grant finally put things back into perspective to give his team a 5-3 win.

In the Under-13 final, X-Roads Warriors also completed a successful season by pulling off the league and cup double when they beat United FC 7-6 after a close penalty shoot-out. The teams had finished regulation time tied at 2-2.

Jade Foggo gave United a 15th minute lead, but in the space of three minutes Warriors were up 2-1 courtesy of two Howard Ascento strikes.

United would then have to wait until the latter stages of the match for Jahnai Watson's equaliser that sent the match into penalties.

Youth soccer action continues tomorrow with the 2002 Pee-Wee Soccer Extravaganza to be held at White Hill Field, starting at 9 a.m.
