'Bruised up' workers on road to recovery

One workman was still in the hospital last night after falling 20 feet and being partly covered in rubble when the floor gave way underneath him at the Imperial Building on Saturday night.

And his boss, Dynamic Excavation owner Eddie Roque, said that he was glad the injured workers were safe and thanked everyone who came to their rescue.

Mr. Roque said it was “going to take a bit of time for them to fully heal”.

“They are all bruised up,” Mr. Roque said.

A spokeswoman from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said last night that Antonio Rego, 26, of Hamilton Parish had been released from hospital.

Dimis Ferreira, 35, of Pembroke, was also released, but Victor Raposo was still on a general ward at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition last night.

Mr. Raposo spent the longest amount of time in the rubble - from around 5.46 p.m. to 7.10 p.m. Mr. Raposo is a 44-year-old Portuguese national who lives in Southampton,

When asked what his company was going to do next, Mr. Roque said it was going to “demolish the building”.

Three workmen were trapped in the rubble of the Imperial building on Church Street for over an hour on Saturday night and two were admitted to hospital.

Thanks to the efforts of 30 Fire Service personnel, many Police and three ambulances, all three men were lucky to escape alive from their harrowing fall.

When the rest of their crew had finished for the day, the trio carried out a check on an interior wall that they did not think was secure.

It was when they were checking out the wall that the floor that they were standing on gave way and they plunged two storeys with rubble partially burying them. Mr. Roque said that he has spoken to the families and that they are relieved and happy that the men are safe.
