Immigration officer arrested after $3 million disappears
Police have arrested an Immigration officer in connection with an investigation into the disappearance of about $3 million from the Department, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Sources told The Royal Gazette yesterdaythat Police arrested the officer this week. The officer is expected to be charged in Magistrates' Court within the next few weeks with stealing more than $100,000 of the missing money.
It is understood that of the $3 million believed to have gone missing, about $400,000 was in cash.
It is not known if the officer who has been arrested is the same officer who was suspended in April from the Immigration Department when it was discovered the money was missing.
At that time, Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Robert Horton said: "Some financial irregularities were discovered and as a result of this I have written to the Secretary of the Cabinet requesting the suspension of a member of staff who had responsibilities for activities in that area and the matter is being investigated by the Police."
It is understood that the investigation is continuing.
Police spokesman Robin Simmons yesterday said he could not confirm the arrest when contacted by The Royal Gazette.
