Book by Monitor leader wins praise
find solutions to problems facing the tourism industry has received heaps of praise in a top US business magazine.
Business Week's associate economics editor Peter Coy said `Plowing the Sea: Nurturing the Hidden Sources of Growth in the Developing World' pointed "the way to change'' for poverty stricken countries in his September 8 review.
Mr. Coy compares the book -- co-written by the Monitor Company's global operations leader Michael Fairbanks -- to two others: `Determinants of Economic Growth: A Cross-Country Empirical Study' and `The Marketing of Nations: A Strategic Approach to Building National Wealth'.
"Plowing the Sea is the best of the three because it is so practical,'' he writes.
"In an era of enormous wealth-creation, the persistence of widespread poverty in many countries is scandalous. These books -- particularly `Plowing the Sea' -- point the way to change.'' The critique is far from the damning review the book received in the Economist magazine which said it was "superficial, jargon-filled and dull''.
The August 16 review called their "ill-informed attack on economic analysis particularly galling'' and their advice for developing countries "simultaneously incoherent and incomprehensible''.
When contacted, Mr. Fairbanks said the Economist review was a "surprise and a disappointment''. He said the book had four other reviews in the international press which gave a "sound endorsement of the work''.
