BFIS virtual sessions help students learn about insurance industry

The Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies has presented six “A Day in the Life of …” virtual sessions for students that focused on different areas of the insurance industry.

BFIS said members of its mentor and schools outreach committees came together to plan the sessions.

Topics covered included underwriting, claims, accounting and finance, ILS, cat modelling and actuarial science, with the opening sessions covering “career perspectives” and “mastering college to career” and the closing session covering “life cycle of insurance – bringing it all together”.

A BFIS spokeswoman said the lunchtime sessions were well attended, with 25-30 students participating in each.

The internship series was opened by Stephen Jones of Chubb, the chairman of BFIS.

Presenters included: Mike Schindel and Marlon Williams, Hiscox; Stephen Bath and Diamond-Lynn Binns, RenRe; Ashton Bell, Victoria Cunningham and Nick Butterfield, Allied World; Rachel Cabot, Axa XL; Carla Weeks and Sara Hadlun, Enstar; Ben Adolph, Leadenhall; Peter Riihiluoma, Daniel Hill and Max Kehrli, Hamilton; Kyla Evans and Laura Burns, Marsh; Mark Chudleigh, Kennedys; Brittany DeFrias, MS Amlin; and David Amaro, in-house counsel.

Following one of the sessions, a BFIS spokeswoman said a student attending Queen’s University, Smith School of Business, said: “I am really grateful to BFIS and the many re/insurance industry experts who are taking time out of their busy schedules to educate and support Bermudian students through these mini-internship sessions.

“As a university student with great interest in learning about re/insurance, I am finding these sessions incredibly valuable.”

BFIS normally offers short intensive internships annually to a total of 16 students.

Students participate in either Bermuda, London, Chicago or Atlanta internships, visiting numerous re/insurance companies and meeting with CEOs, underwriters, brokers, lawyers, actuaries, and more. These internships are made possible with financial support from Axa XL and Allied World.

BFIS said it has been unable to offer the internships in the past two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students were invited to participate in the series of virtual sessions instead.
