Lifeguard recruits undergo intensive training
Rescue, resuscitation and patrolling are some of the hard skills being learnt by Bermuda’s latest cadre of lifeguards in training.
There are seven new recruits undertaking the intensive course under the Department of Parks’ Lifeguard Service for the 2021 season, bringing the total number of active lifeguards to 10.
They will alternate between Horseshoe Bay in Southampton Parish, John Smith’s Bay in Smith’s, and Clearwater Beach and Turtle Beach in St George’s. From around Labour Day they will patrol Horseshoe Bay only until November.
Candidates carry out land-based and wet practical training revolving around water rescue, CPR [cardiopulmonary resuscitation], and AED [automated external defibrillation] use as well as basic and advanced first aid.
The course has been condensed into nine days and will afford the recruits a lifeguard certificate.
Anyone interested in training to become a lifeguard in 2022 can contact Nathan Trott, Department of Parks lifeguard superintendent at njtrott@gov.bm or by calling 236-5902.
