West fall just shy of clean sweep as school sport takes centre stage

Ezekiel Stoneham converted the winning penalty to prevent the West from making a clean sweep of titles during last Friday?s Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF) Annual All-Star football matches at a wet and windy National Sports Centre (NSC).

Stoneham?s game-clinching spot-kick earned the East a 5-4 win on penalties over the West in the boys senior school All-Star clash after the two old rivals remained deadlocked at one goal apiece at the end of regulation time.

In a match featuring up-and-coming Premier Division players, PHC Zebras? Marquel Waldron ? son of well-known PHC cricketer Cal Waldron ? followed up on a Mikkal Crockwell rebound to fire the East ahead.

But North Village?s Shayne Hollis ? who is still awaiting on immigration papers to begin studies in Florida ? levelled the scores to send the match to penalties.

But with the exception of last Friday?s featured match, the West had things all their way at a windswept Sports Centre.

The night?s action kicked off with the West outscoring the East 6-3 in the senior girls All-Star match contested at a blistering pace.

Dandy Stars? Shonte Campbell ? daughter of former Hornet?s centre back Wayne Campbell ? shone brightly by netting five of her team?s six goals.

East struck first with Akilah Brimmer capitalising on a superb solo run. But West immediately hit back with Campbell equalising with a short-range effort.

Campbell then turned it up a notch by scoring the second and third goals to complete her hat-trick in the space of ten minutes.

CedarBridge Academy?s Jessica Furtado then converted with a measured free kick from distance just before the half to prevent the West from running away with the match.

Shantilla Knotts then scored the easiest of goals after the restart to draw the East level with their rivals, only for Campbell to restore the West?s lead. Berkeley Institute?s Jennifer Nusum then made it 5-3 to put the West in a comfortable position before Campbell netted her fifth goal of the night to put the match beyond the East?s reach.

?Shontae is a good player and I hope she continues achieving bigger and better things,? commented West coach Chevonne Armstrong.

Incredibly, in the boys Primary school All-Star match, it took 20 penalties before West finally ran out 7-6 victors.

It was the second-straight year the West won on penalty kicks after both teams remained scoreless at the end of regulation time.

In the boys Middle school All- Star match the West put on a dazzling second half display to prevail 4-0 in a match that was virtually all one-way traffic.

West went ahead for good in the 20th minute when Jalen Harvey?s free kick was slammed into the roof of the net by an unmarked Walter Webb in the box.

The West then stretched their lead through Gandia Russell who scored a well-executed brace to put his team in a commanding position.

The diminutive Trae Harvey then put the East out of their misery with a thunderbolt from all of 30 yards to cap off a memorable night for the West All Stars.

?I was very pleased with the way my team played. They worked very hard in training and I was very excited from the outset at their technical ability which allowed us to play total football,? commented West coach Mark Thorne afterwards.

?We were well balanced in every position and this gave me a lot of confidence going into the game. I believe in total football, but you need the right players. And these boys were the right players. They gave me exactly what I had asked: composure, hard work, discipline, speed and good sportsmanship.

?Many of these boys have real potential to play at a higher level, and hopefully with the injection of funds into this awesome game they will get that chance.?
