Government releases dementia help cards

The Government has released a series of dementia help cards designed to help people with the condition.

Tinee Furbert, the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, said the cards contained basic information about the holder, such as their name and the contact details for their carers.

She added: “Dementia helpcards are for people with dementia to carry to make it easier for them to ask for help or assistance when they are out in the community.”

The cards can be obtained from the ministry between Monday and Friday by calling 444-2466 or e-mailing msdsrequest@gov.bm

Ms Furbert said the initiative was one of several launched by the ministry to help people affected by the condition.

She added the ministry had launched an education campaign in February dedicated to support families, caregivers and the general public.

Ms Furbert said: “To date, we have hosted a six-month radio talk show on Magic 102.7FM, three panel discussions, a social media educational campaign, and are now launching Dementia helpcards.

“Caring for those living with dementia is a community effort, and we all need to do our part.

“I encourage each and everyone in Bermuda to strive to support those in our community living with dementia as well as those who selflessly care for them – caregiving is not an easy task, yet caregivers consistently give their all.”

Ms Furbert said anyone who wanted to learn more about dementia should follow the ministry on Facebook and Instagram.

The three panel discussions on dementia are still available online.
