Olympic hero Flora Duffy has ended the year on another high after she was listed by The World Economic Forum as one of nine women who made history in 2021.

The influential Swiss-based think tank said: “Duffy won the women’s triathlon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, collecting Bermuda’s first ever gold medal.”

Others included on the list were Najla Bouden Romdhane, Tunisia’s first female prime minister; Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian appointed as Director General of the World Trade Organisation and the first African to hold the post; Maria Ressa, a Filipina journalist who won the Nobel peace prize for her work “safeguarding freedom of expression”; and Wally Frank, a former pilot who became the oldest person to fly to the edge of space aged 82.

Simon Biles, a top US gymnast who withdrew from Olympics events because of her mental health; Chloé Zhao, the director of Nomadland and the first woman of colour to win the best director Oscar; Laurel Hubbard, the first openly transgender woman to compete in the Olympic Games; and Kamala Harris, the first Black person and the first woman to hold the post of US vice-president, were also included in the nine standouts.
