Jarryd Dillas and Kenny Leseur bowed out of the Latin America Amateur Championship in the Dominican Republic yesterday.

The Bermudian pair both missed the cut made at six over at the halfway stage of the 72-hole event.

Dillas in particular would have been extremely disappointed with himself having missed out by a single shot.

The top local amateur started the second round well on course to progress to the business end of the championship at Casa de Campo at even par.

He was still in with a shout at four over with three holes left to play when disaster struck.

A double bogey at the par 4, 8th hole left Dillas with no margin for error heading to the final hole of the round.

However, it just was not to be his day as a bogey on the par 4, ninth put paid to the experienced player’s hopes of making a second straight cut at the event having managed to do so in 2020 when he achieved his best showing of 28th.

Dillas came in at seven-over 79 which left him with a 36-hole total of seven-over 151.

The reigning Johnnie Walker Classic champion’s second stroll around the par-72 layout was in stark contrast to his solid display the previous day.

“I could not have asked for a better start to the tournament,” Dillas told The Royal Gazette.

“I drove it well, was disciplined with my approaches into the greens and was solid with the putter.”

Dillas, who was making his seventh appearance at the event, opening round score included an eagle, birdie, double bogey and bogey.

Leseur’s hopes of making the cut were virtually over at the start of yesterday’s second round having carded an opening round 17-over 89 that left him tied for 98th.

The high school senior carded a six-over 78 yesterday which included three birdies and nine bogeys.

Leseur struggled on the front nine where he carded five of his bogeys, including three in succession at holes 7, 8 and 9, to make the turn at five over for the round.

However, regaining composure, he fared much better on the back nine which he played at one over after rattling in three of the five birdies he made on his debut at the tournament. eseur bowed out with a two-round total of 23-over 167.

Julian Perico, of Peru, leads the field by three shots at nine under.

Segundo Oliva Pinto, of Argentina, is second at six under and compatriot Abel Gallegos tied for third a farther shot back.

The eventual winner will receive an invitation to the PGA Tour Masters and Open Championship, as well as the British and US Amateur Championships and any other United States Golf Association event for which they are otherwise qualified apart from the US Open.

The winner and runner-up ll gain entry to the final qualifying stage for the US Open.

This year marks the third time Casa de Campo is hosting the event which is regarded among the most prestigious amateur championships in the world.
