Tributes have poured in for a devoted nanny and mother of three who died after a collision with a car.

Antonieta Pascua, 57, was named as the fourteenth road fatality of 2026 after the incident near the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Angle Street on Sunday.

Maria Silva, Ms Pascua’s younger sister, said the tragedy came shortly after the death of their 46-year-old brother in their home country of the Philippines.

She added: “This has been very hard for our family, especially for my mom.

“Two children she’s lost. She can’t see them any more.”

Ms Pascua moved to Bermuda in 2010 after a family member recommended her for a job.

Ms Silva said it was her first and only time living abroad.

She said her sister worked as a nanny for two families, one of whom she had been with for 16 years and where she was treated like part of the family.

The 44-year-old added that Ms Pascua had always been a nurturing person, even taking care of her and their siblings when they were children.

Ms Silva said: “She was very strict, but she was very kind and generous.

“She was a loving sister. She was very responsible towards us, to my parents, to everybody. She loved us.”

Ms Pascua met her future husband while in Bermuda and eventually had three children — two girls, who are 27 and 26, and a boy, who is 17.

Despite her family having to move back to the Philippines, Ms Silva said, Ms Pascua was “a very good mother to her children and a very good wife to her husband”.

She added: “It’s very tough for them. I’m lucky because I can touch my sister and could see her when she was struggling.

“Her family didn’t get to see her. They just saw her on a screen, so it’s very tough.”

Ms Silva said her sister encouraged her to move to the island from Hong Kong at the start of 2024.

She explained: “She was every excited for me to come here because she didn’t have family.

“Our aunty moved to London and we had a cousin here, but she’s now in Canada.”

Ms Silva said she and her “manang” — an Ilocano title for older sister — often went on walks together, and said Ms Pascua was overall “a lovely sister”.

Navigating her death was going to be “tough”, Ms Silva added, especially because she now felt alone on the island.

She said: “My birthday’s coming up on October 23 and she’s always the one who’s giving me a gift. Now no one’s giving me a gift.”

Ryan de Jesus, the president of the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, said he had known Ms Pascua for several years and met her through Ms Silva.

He described her as “a lovely person” who always smiled and joked despite keeping to herself.

He added: “Whenever there was a charity event for the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, she always attended and helped out.

“She was a very happy-go-lucky person.

“She’s kind, she’s religious and she was a family-oriented woman.”

Mr de Jesus said Ms Pascua was an avid pickleball player and a devoted Roman Catholic who attended St Theresa’s Cathedral in Hamilton.

He said: “When that accident happened on Sunday night, she’d just come out of St Theresa’s Cathedral and had just attended the Sunday Mass.”

Mr de Jesus said Ms Pascua’s death came about a month after her eldest daughter — who came to stay with her for several months — flew back to the Philippines.

He added that she had recently bought a ticket to return home to see her family during Christmas.

Mr de Jesus said: “She told her family and her friends ‘I miss my daughter, I have homesickness right now, so I need to go home and have a vacation during Christmas’.

“So everything was bought and everything was planned.”

He added: “Her younger sister was so devastated.”

In the days before her death, the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda held a vigil for Ms Pascua at St Theresa’s Cathedral.

Mr de Jesus said: “A lot of people came to her vigil on Wednesday night and said a lot of things about her.

“I was so surprised because she seems like a very reserved person.”

Mr de Jesus said the family were organising a memorial to take place at a later date.
