Bermuda logged its first death linked to Covid-19 since February 21, it was announced tonight.

The grim news brought the total number of fatalities attributed to the pandemic to 124.

Kim Wilson, the health minister warned: “We are beginning to see an increase in coronavirus transmission on island, and the current upward trend is worrying.”

Ms Wilson added: “This uptick does not take into consideration that there are many additional positive cases that are not being reported.”

The number of active cases also jumped, up to 224 from 180 cases at Monday’s update.

There are ten people are in hospital but none are in intensive care.

The island had 12 people being treated for Covid-19 in hospital on Monday – with none in intensive care.

Positive cases fell in the aftermath of the island’s most recent surge of Covid-19, which peaked in early January.

There were 107 positive cases found out of 3,772 tests administered from last Sunday until Tuesday.

There was one case that came from overseas, with 32 classed as on-island transmission and 74 under investigation.

There have been 62 recoveries since Monday.

Ms Wilson offered her condolences to the family and friends of the latest victim of the coronavirus.

The seven-day average of the island’s real-time reproduction number is now 0.99.

Ms Wilson said 72.4 per cent of the population had been given two shots of the vaccine.

There have been 125,925 vaccinations administered since January last year.

Of residents aged 65 and over, 87 per cent have had one jab and 85.6 per cent have received two doses.

Of those eligible for a booster, 71.7 per cent have received it.

Ms Wilson said: “Living safely with Covid means we must continue to follow public health guidance.

“Avoid closed spaces, crowded places and close contact settings.

“Wear a mask, practise good hand hygiene, and maintain physical distance.

“Take an at-home antigen test before going to any events or out with friends and family.”
