Dear Sir,I agree with your correspondent’s Letter to the Editor today (October 21, “Under-representation of women in sport”), but this will have to come with true equality.Serena Williams has called for women’s tennis players to get the same or equal purse as the men’s circuit. Also the LPGA calls for equal pay compared to PGA players. I would agree with both if women play five sets instead of three; and women play off the same tees as the men. Females are now in the US Marines and are expected to do the same training as their male counterparts, exposing them to the same threats. In Bermuda, we have female firefighters and policewomen, and I am very grateful for their contributions to the community. With true equality, let men and women play in the same sports, competing on equal footing. Let us get rid of male and female sports. I guess I was brought up in a different world where I was taught to respect females and show the respect to them such as holding doors open, offering a seat when on a full train or bus, and walking on the outside of a woman on the pavement. But all of that is going out of the window these days. So unfortunate that I am an old fuddy duddy! ANTONY SIESEPaget
