A Bermuda Climate Summit kicks off tomorrow night with international leaders invited.

The forum has been convened through Tuesday by the Bermuda Business Development Agency in partnership with the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers and Kroll Bond Rating Agency.

The event aims to position the island as a leading centre of climate-risk finance.

It follows a New York visit by Jason Hayward, the economy and labour minister, to the BDA’s executive forum on May 11.

The forum promoted the island as a domicile for new international business, innovation tech companies and modern infrastructure projects.

A ministry spokesman said the forum drew “leading experts from the global investment community” and would keep the island at the fore as a location for new firms, expansion of business and capital investment.

Mr Hayward joined David Hart, chief executive of the BDA, for what he called a “keynote fireside chat”.

"I highlighted Bermuda's reputation as the world's risk capital and a destination ripe for investment, emphasised the importance of international business to our economy.

"I explained the key competitive advantages in Bermuda's business ecosystem, including a progressive government willing to work with industry, our world-class regulator in the Bermuda Monetary Authority and a mature business environment with access to global financial and professional service firms."

Mr Hayward said the New York forum underscored the Government's commitment to maintaining the island’s position as a top-tier business jurisdiction.

"I made it clear to all that Bermuda is open for business,“ he added.
