The ICS Tires Cobra Puma Junior Championships got under way yesterday in perfect conditions at Ocean View Golf Course.

In the boys over-15 group, Adam Perry, the recent Bermuda Stroke Play champion, shot a solid round of 74 to lead Bermuda Optimist player Dylan Muso by nine shots. Perry was one under on the front nine but struggled a bit on the second nine to finish four over par.

Muso struggled on the par-threes and finished with a score of 83 to hold down second place. Jonah Faria, competing in his first junior tournament, also struggled on the second nine.

After carding a solid 44 going out, Faria found the going a bit tough coming in before finishing in third place on 94.

In the Girls Division, lone entry Aina Namiki, shot an impressive score of 51 for her nine holes.

In the Boys 11-and-under, Charlie Smith fired a four-over-par 39 to lead his opponent, Lachlan Souter, by just one stroke. Lachlan shot a five-over 40 to stay within reach of Smith.

A further five shots back was Lewis McFarlane, who was within striking distance until an eight on No 8 saw him finish his round on 45.

In the Boys 12-14 age group, Arman Newton finished with two birdies to shoot 82 and has a comfortable ten-stroke lead over Ramsay Sutter, who holds on to second place by two shots over Saqui Robinson, a promising St David’s cricketer.

After a tough start on the 1st hole, Robinson managed to steady the ship and finish on 94.

Brian Morris, the tournament director, was pleased with the performance of the youngsters on the opening day. "What an awesome day for junior golf at Ocean View Golf Course,“ Morris said.

“We had many spectators encouraging the kids around the course, which was long and hot. To their credit they stuck it out and everyone managed to finish.

“What a lot of talent we have. These kids need to play more and get themselves in this environment a lot more. Then you will see the scores drop and the standard raise.”

Morris added: “Today was a lot of nerves as the majority of these kids haven't played that much competitive golf. I am going to do my best through Ocean View to see that they do.

“I am looking forward to tomorrow and encourage anyone to come up and cheer these kids on. It’s going to be exciting.”

Play starts at 10am, with the final players going off at 11.10.
