A drink-driver who fell asleep in his car was banned from the roads for 18 months.

Irijah Steede, 33, from Hamilton Parish, admitted driving under the influence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Adley Duncan, for the Crown, told the court that police officers were on Middle Road in Paget when they noticed a parked car with the key in the ignition on August 15, 2020.

They noticed that Steede, the driver, was asleep. They knocked on his window a few times before he woke up.

When he stepped out of the car, officers noticed that Steede was unsteady on his feet and that his breath smelt of alcohol.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breathalyser test revealed that he had in between 115 and 122 mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

In addition to being banned, Steede was fined $1,500. Magistrate Tyrone Chin gave him until November 10 to pay it.
