The Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre hopes to raise $40,000 next month in support of Movember.

During Movember, men grow their facial hair throughout all of November to raise awareness for men’s health issues such as testicular and prostate cancer and mental health.

BCHC’s event and programme manager Azuree Williams said: “From an educational and mental health perspective, it is important for men to have conversations about their health and to go and get checked [for cancer], because not enough men get checked.”

The centre hopes to reach their $40,000 goal through their two major fundraisers: the Man on the Run 5K running/walking event and their finale event, which will be open only to Movember participants and their families.

BCHC will also be showing five screenings of the prostate cancer documentary The Silent Killer throughout November.

“Next Wednesday, the first screening will be at Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club,” Ms Williams said. “It will also be shown at Warwick Workmen’s Club, Somerset Cricket Club, Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club and Devonshire Recreation Club.

“We will also have a urologist on hand after each screening to answer questions.”

Three corporate entries have registered for Movember as of October 28: Deloitte, KPMG and Aspen.

There have been 58 entries so far, including both individuals and teams.

Ms Williams said: “We are so grateful for all of our Movember Bermuda participants over the years for their efforts to raise money for men’s health awareness.

“All of the funds raised will support our men’s health programmes in prevention, early detection and treatment.

“These funds will also make it possible for our centre to continue providing services to those who are uninsured or unable to pay, through our equal access programme.”

Individuals and companies can register for Movember by visiting here. The registration deadline is November 1.
