A lip-sync contest held at the weekend hit the top of the charts, the “Queen of Bermuda” said yesterday.

Mark Anderson said: “The event went extremely well — better than I expected.

“It reached a whole new audience — and it was definitely the audience that I was looking for.”

Mr Anderson, whose alter ego is Sybil Barrington, the Queen of Bermuda, said that a “diverse” crowd of about 300 people attended Bermuda’s Lip Sync Idol held at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Saturday.

He explained: “We had people from all walks of life that came out to support the contest.

“It was a family oriented event. We had children with their parents who were supporting their loved ones who were performing on stage.”

Anomi Amaya Devoreaux, who represented Sandys, captured the $1,000 first prize with a performance of Ciara’s Got Me Good.

Mr Anderson said: “The highlight for me was that his parents were in the audience.”

A total of seven performers took to the stage for the event.

Janita Thomas took home $200 as first runner-up and Marcus Smith won $100 as second runner-up. Ingrid Welch and Gina Love both represented Pembroke and husband and wife Howard and Takira Mello represented Southampton and St George’s, respectively.

Mr Anderson, a stage veteran, offered some advice for would-be performers.

He said: “You must first know the song to the T. The second is that you have to tell the story of that song.

“Once you have those two down, then you’ve got it made.”

Mr Anderson said that a follow-up event was being considered for April.

He added that anyone who missed out on the first event was welcome to take part.
