A Devonshire man who was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed his bike has been fined $1,200.

Tiago Bento, 25, admitted the offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court today.

Javone Rogers, for the Crown, told the court that Bento was riding east on South Road in Devonshire on April 17 when he lost control of his bike.

Police met Bento at the hospital after the accident and smelt alcohol on his breath. His eyes were also bloodshot.

Bento was so intoxicated, the court was told, that he was unable to properly open his mouth to take a breathalyser test and had to have blood drawn instead.

The test showed that he had around 163mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg per 100ml.

Magistrate Craig Attridge fined Bento $1,200 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
