Art enthusiasts looking for a career in museums are being offered the chance for some on-the-job training through the Bermuda National Gallery.

The three-month paid internships, sponsored by the Bank of Butterfield, will give successful applicants an insight into all aspects of museum operations.

Selected candidates will support the small team of gallery staff with projects that cover all aspects of running the organisation, from ideation to administration.

Peter Lapsley, the executive director of the gallery, said: "For any student, the chance to work in a setting that expands their skill set and experience is a great opportunity.

“The Bermuda National Gallery is excited to be able to continue offering a paid internship programme in 2023 thanks to Butterfield.

“The arts and culture sector is a crucial part of any community and the experiences that the gallery provides are designed to support our interns through their next steps – wherever they may take them."

Michael Neff, the Bank of Butterfield’s managing director of Bermuda and International Wealth, added: “Butterfield is pleased to support the Bermuda National Gallery with its continued efforts to create learning opportunities and education programmes for students of all ages in our community, helping to inspire the next generation through arts, culture and heritage.

“Much like our own internship programme for those with an interest in financial services, this initiative gives young people with an interest in the creative industries an opportunity to get paid and gain hands-on experience.”

A gallery spokesman said the programme was tailored to each participant’s experience and interest, with the aim of developing their resume to best help with their career goals.

This will include, but is not limited to, assisting with office administration, exhibition research, design and creation, marketing, event planning, art installation, exhibition tours, public speaking, and education programmes.

Intern Julia Cox, a photographer studying for a degree in forensic psychology, said: “I recommend that students of all backgrounds apply for the internship programme.

“One can gain experience in an array of skill sets while working here, from events management to marketing and communications, including how you interact with people in a professional setting.

“All skills, to an extent, that are applicable to a psychology degree and to many other career paths that differ from the visual arts.”

Alice Moniz, a former intern who is studying for a master's degree in public policy in Paris, added: “The internship was unforgettable.

“From giving tours, curating an exhibition, and learning about the internal workings of an organisation, I developed valuable relational, organisational and operational skills.

“Another wonderful part of the internship experience was working with their wonderful, dynamic team. It was truly an experience which nurtured growth and in which teamwork was valued.

“I hope to find such a great working environment in my next professional experience. This was an important part of my career trajectory.

“I will carry the lessons learnt and great memories with me.”

The standard period for the internship is five days a week for three months but this can be amended based on the day-to-day needs of the candidate.

Three internships, open to students between the ages of 18 and 25, are being offered for spring, summer and autumn this year.

To apply, e-mail your resume to director@bng.bm. The closing date for applications is February 20.
