Government seeks contractors for Swing Bridge repairs

The Ministry of Public Works has put out a request for quotations for temporary repair work on an ageing East End bridge.

A notice, published on Monday on the Government’s procurement website, said the ministry needed to make “urgent repairs” to the Swing Bridge in St George’s.

“The work involves the supply, fabrication and installation of new steel beams to provide structural repairs in the approach spans to Swing Bridge, as detailed in the documents and as shown on the contract drawings,” the notice said.

A site visit for the project was scheduled to take place this week — although alternative times could be made available — with a submission deadline of March 16.

Last year it was announced that a condition assessment and load rating would be carried out on the structure. That survey took place last month.

It had been predicted that both the Swing Bridge, which connects St George’s island and St David’s island, and Long Bird Bridge, which links St David’s island to the Causeway, would reach the end of their useful lives in 2021.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said last year that $400,000 had been earmarked in this year’s Budget for repair work on the bridge.

However, he said plans to replace the bridge had been moved to the back burner because of the economic challenges faced by the Government.
