Logie's plans disrupted

Bermuda's ICC Inter- continental Cup plans were altered this week when four members of the team selected to tour Denmark, Holland and Ireland early next month withdrew from the squad for various reasons.

The Royal Gazette can confirm that fast bowler Kevin Hurdle and batsman Azeem Pitcher will miss the trip because of work commitments as well as all-rounder Maurice Lowe, who has pulled out for personal reasons, and teenage all-rounder Greg Maybury because of Under-19 World Cup qualifying commitments in Toronto at the same time.

"All of these players have been confirmed out of the tour for various reasons and this is the reality of the situation we now find ourselves facing," stated national coach Gus Logie. "So either we look for replacements and take what we have or we cancel the tour."

The 11th hour withdrawals have prompted a frantic search by national team selectors for suitable replacements who can make the necessary sacrifice and be given time off work by their employers to commit themselves to the three-week tour.

Flatts' all-rounder Kijuan Franks and Somerset pair Jacobi Robinson and Dwight Basden are among those currently being viewed as potential replacements to fill the void, while assistant national coach Herbie Bascome could also be called upon to lend his experience to the team.

"Herbie has been doing well (playing in the domestic league) and so he's been told to carry along his clothes," Logie added.

Bermuda are scheduled to depart for Denmark on August 6 to play two limited overs friendlies before arriving in Holland on August 11 to play their opening Intercontinental Cup match (August 13 to 16) as well as two official One-Day Internationals (August 18 and 20).

The national team, which has undergone a significant facelift since appearing in March's World Cup in the Caribbean, then travel to Dublin, Ireland, to play their second Intercontinental Cup match (August 23 to 26) before returning to the Island on August 27.

Bermuda Cricket Board also confirmed yesterday that the Island would be sending an Under-13 national team to compete in a regional tournament to be held in St.Kitt's, Nevis from August 20 to September 1, while the Island's Under-19s are scheduled to return home today from Barbados after competing in the Sir Gary Sobers International Schools Tournament for the third straight year.
