Best and Jennings may team up in Village coaching roles

Clyde Best: Thinking it over.

Former national team midfielder Elliott Jennings and former West Ham star striker Clyde Best have both been linked with a deal which could see the pair working in tandem as head and assistant coaches at North Village next season.

Sources told The Royal Gazette that both Jennings and Best are currently being hotly pursued by the Premier Division side who are said to be very keen to have the pair sign on the dotted line following the unexpected resignation of head coach Dwayne (Streaker) Adams at the end of the 2006-07 season.

It is understood that Jennings, himself a former Village stalwart, is the leading candidate to fill Adams' vacated post with Best as his potential assistant.

As of yesterday Village officials remained tightlipped over the possible deal, a deal which could also see brothers Richard and Robert Calderon pulling strings behind the scenes in some form of technical capacity.

"We have a plan that we want to put in place which will involve everybody. And there are certain things that we hope to achieve as a team. But I'm not sure what I'm going to do as yet," commented Best.

"I haven't decided on anything yet but I am thinking about it. I have been approached by a friend of mine (Jennings) and we have talked a bit about me possibly assisting in some area.

"It really doesn't matter where I am placed because I really just want to assist with the kids. But first we will have to wait and see what happens."

Should the deal go through, Jennings will become the fifth different head coach at Village in the new millennium behind interim national coach Kenny Thompson, Scott Morton, Kentoine Jennings and the affable Adams, who announced his resignation shortly following Village's shock FA Cup loss to First Division St. George's last March.

In his first season at the helm Adams rewrote the history books by becoming the first coach to land the coveted yet largely elusive triple crown (League, FA Cup and Friendship Trophy) in his rookie season on the job.

Success, however, would soon be followed by failure as for the first time since 1999 Village failed to lift a single major domestic title.

Adams is now rumoured to be heading back for a second playing stint with First Division Southampton Rangers.

"I just got to the point where I felt I was no longer able to motivate the players to try and get the best out of them as a unit. And so the best thing to do at the time was to leave the club and let them bring someone else in who can motivate North Village as a team," the former national team 'keeper told this newspaper.

""What I was looking for wasn't really coming across the players, and so it made absolutely no sense trying to beat a dead horse.

"Last year (2006) was a unique year for me as a first-time coach, but I don't look at this season as a failure. We at North Village set a standard last year that just wasn't kept by the coaching staff as well as the players and so what we got was the results that we did.

"The first season our training habits and our overall approach was a lot different, and I think the results showed just that. It's been a good experience and I have no regrets. I think Maceo (Dill) and I did a good job and I also believe that I've developed and learned a few things that will help me later down the road should I decide to coach again."
