All-rounder Brangman brought in for Devonshire cup defence

Champions Devonshire have made only one change to their Central Counties squad for today’s second round clash against Police at Devonshire Recreation Club.

They’ve opted for another all-rounder in player/coach Ricky Brangman sr in favour of seamer Lovintz Tota for today’s cup encounter.

Devonshire retained their Central Counties title on May 19 without having to take to the pitch against Western Stars as heavy rain ruled out any chance of play getting underway during the opening round at the Den.

“The guys were very disappointed about the first game because they really wanted to play. But we are ready to play now and the team we have picked is actually stronger than before,” Brangman said.

The champions, however, are about to come up against an unknown quantity in a Police side that have yet to see action in any form of domestic cricket so far this season.

The former powerhouses opted not to compete in the Bermuda Cricket Board Two-Day League and had their May 20 limited overs contest with PHC at Police Field postponed due to the fact that the Prospect pitch wasn’t prepared.

“We don’t even know who is playing. But I’m sure they have been training very hard and preparing themselves for the challenge and so we also have to be prepared to play no matter who we face,” Brangman said.

Two individuals Brangman and his players may have to keep close tabs on are veteran all-rounders Ferdinand Thorne and Dennis Archer who rejoined Police at the start of the season following a stint at Stars.

“Those guys have been around for along time and it only takes one of them to get going. They should be pretty strong but we are all geared up to play,” Brangman added.

Devonshire have included two colts in their line-up for today’s clash — batsmen Jeremy Fray and Allen Richardson — and will again be pinning their hopes for success on the broad shoulders of cousins Dean Stephens and Ricardo Brangman, who they hope will come good with the bat, and an attack stacked with seamers.

Elsewhere today, tenants Cleveland County lock horns with landlords St.George’s at Wellington Oval while Somerset host the Island’s Under-19 youth squad at Somerset Cricket Club in Premier Division make-up fixtures.

In tomorrow’s Premier Division action, Cleveland host Western Stars at Wellington Oval, Somerset have been pitted against a Flatts side they beat convincingly last weekend at Somerset Cricket Club while St.David’s and nearby rivals St.George’s will also meet for the second time in seven days at Lords.

At Southampton Oval defending league champs Southampton Rangers will look to rebound from a recent shock defeat to Flatts — their first limited overs loss in two seasons — against the Under-19s at Southampton Oval.

There will also be a full slate of First Division fixtures on tap tomorrow as Bailey’s Bay — also making a first appearance for the season — host Somerset Bridge at Sea Breeze Oval, Police do battle with Warwick at Police Field, PHC take on Willow Cuts at White Hill Field and Devonshire meet Leg Trappers for the second straight weekend at the Den.
