<Bz39>Khano keen to keep alive Revs hot streak
With victory last weekend over the LA Galaxy, MLS Eastern Conference side New England Revolution stretched their current unbeaten streak to six games.
The Revs defeated arch rivals Galaxy 3-2 in their own backyard in the City of Angels and will now look to continue their exceptional start to the season with another win on the road this Saturday against Houston Dynamo — a match that will be televised live on Fox soccer channel.
And New England’s Bermudian midfielder Khano Smith is more than keen to get a favourable result over Houston on the weekend as they were the team that defeated them in last season’s MLS Cup final.
“Houston are a very good team and it would be nice to beat them and put more distance between ourselves and everybody else. So I guess you can call it revenge,” Smith said.
The Revs soared to the top of the Eastern Conference table after outscoring the Galaxy — still without the services of former England captain David Beckham — in what proved to be an evenly-contested battle between the two MLS giants.
“LA are a good team and will only get better with the people they are signing. But it was good to get a victory in their own backyard and it was a great atmosphere playing in LA,” Smith said.
“We were losing and then we went up 2-1 and then let the lead slip away and then scored again before LA even got a touch of the ball. Confidence is really high and we feel that we can beat just about anybody at the moment. So we are very pleased with the results that we have been getting.”
Smith, however, feels the best has yet to come.
“We still are not playing the way we want to, but we are definitely improving game by game,” he added. “Obviously we are looking to get as many points as we possibly can to win the league. And I think we have put ourselves in a good position to do so.
“We have already given ourselves a good start and now all we have to do is keep doing what we are doing and keep everybody behind us.”
Health-wise the former Dandy Town striker said that he’s “fine” and despite the presence of a mild ankle sprain is raring to run out against Houston on Saturday.
“I’m alright in that department (fitness),” Smith insisted.
The senior national team member has been a regular starter in coach Steve Nicol’s plans, a trend he hopes to see continue.
“I’m getting what I have been looking for all of this time - consistent starts. And I guess you can now see that in my performances,” Smith added. “I’m now consistently playing and it’s only natural that I am going to improve.”
The Revs welcomed playmaker Shalrie Joseph back from a one-game suspension last weekend. And according to Smith the influential midfielder wasted no time getting back down to serious business in the middle of the park alongside his Bermudian team-mate.
“He is still one of the best players in the league,” Smith said. “And it was good to have him back as he is the emotional leader of the team.”
