Parents block son's transfer
Under-19 national cricket team batsman Chris Douglas has been denied a transfer by Bermuda Cricket Board — following a protest by his parents!
The promising left-handed batsman had hoped to move from Warwick to neighbouring Southampton Rangers this season without his parents’ consent.
It’s understood he wanted the transfer in order to play alongside his Under-19 team-mate and overnight World Cup sensation Malachi Jones at the Oval.
A Southampton Rangers spokesperson confirmed that Douglas’ transfer application and the required $100 fee had been submitted to the Board prior to the March 30 deadline.
But it emerged yesterday that Douglas’ parents strongly objected to their son’s move and submitted a written protest to the BCB, also prior to last month’s deadline.
And after taking that letter into consideration, the Board turned down the player’s request.
Douglas will now remain at Warwick this season, the BCB confirmed yesterday.
“Young Douglas wanted to transfer but we received a letter from his parents saying that he is not transferring. And so he is staying with Warwick this season,” a Board spokesperson told The Royal Gazette.
Rangers, who paid the young cricketer’s transfer fee, will now be reimbursed.
“The fee went in with the transfer application, but once the transfer is denied then the club is reimbursed. That’s the way it works,” the spokesperson added.
“Rangers did meet the transfer deadline, but we (BCB) also received a letter signed by his parents prior to the deadline. And that is how we came to our decision.”
The talented Douglas is currently training with Bermuda’s Under-19 national squad due to compete in July’s Sir Gary Sobers Tournament in Barbados and August’s Under-19 World Cup qualifiers in Toronto.
