Ming eyes pro deal with Hogges

Bermuda star Damon Ming in action against El Salvador

English non-league and national football team forward Damon Ming has been spotted training with the Bermuda Hogges.

Ming has reportedly decided to try his luck this summer in the United Soccer League (USL) Division Two ranks with the Island’s first professional outfit.

And if successful the former Devonshire Colts, Dandy Town and Somerset Trojans player could become one of three full-time pros on the Hogges roster.

The High Point University graduate could also be reunited with team coach Paul Scope who played an integral part in getting him to play in the UK where he suited up for the likes of Barnet FC, Maidenhead United, Aylesbury United and Hayes United.

In 2004, Ming helped Somerset to gain promotion to the Premier Division before heading to England in pursuit of a professional career.

The 28-year-old forward netted a brace during the Hogges’ 7-2 win over FA Cup finalists Boulevard at Shelly Bay Field earlier this week, and he is also scheduled to see action in another friendly against Dudley Eve and Friendship Trophy champions Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow.

Due to strict USL regulations, however, Hogges management are prohibited from divulging specific information on any player prior to them being officially approved by the league.

“I can’t comment on any player at the moment. This is not an amateur league, and we must adhere to USL rules and regulations in everything that we do,” team coach and co-owner Kyle Lightbourne told The Royal Gazette.

Ming has been training with the squad for the past three weeks, and isn’t expected to return to English non-league club Northwood.

“Ming has done very well, gradually improving each game and grabbing two assists when the Woods won 2-0 down at Tiverton Town two weeks ago.

“But unfortunately he has returned to Bermuda at the moment and we are not sure if he is going to return to assist with the battle against relegation,” a club spokesperson said.

The Hogges kick off their debut season in the USL on April 27 and 29 at the National Sports Centre (NSC) where the local club will host the Harrisburg City Islanders.
